When Lizzy set out to update her 1974 A-frame home, she had a clear vision: durable, family-friendly flooring that complemented her home’s mid-century charm. After years of research, she discovered Flooret’s Nakan Craftsman from the Modin LVP Collection—a choice that transformed her basement into a light, inviting space that seamlessly ties into the rest of her home.
Lizzy’s journey began with a challenge: finding basement-appropriate flooring that could withstand the wear and tear of raising a family and owning a large dog. “I spent years researching flooring types,” she recalls. “We decided LVP flooring would best fit our needs. After reading hundreds of reviews, I found Flooret.”
Before installing new floors, Lizzy’s basement was covered in carpet. “We wanted something more durable and easier to clean,” she says. “With a walk-out basement, dirt and debris always made their way inside.” The renovation project encompassed the entire basement, including two living spaces, a bathroom, a workout room, and two bedrooms.
A DIY Transformation
Lizzy and her family took on the installation themselves. “The carpet covered linoleum in some areas, so we had a lot of prep work before we could install the floors,” she explains. Once the base was ready, the family spent three full days laying the flooring. “It was definitely easier than tiling,” Lizzy notes, though they faced challenges such as undercutting around a stone fireplace. Their hard work paid off, resulting in a professional-looking finish.
A Perfect Aesthetic Match
One of the unique aspects of Lizzy’s project was preserving the 1974 aesthetic of her home. “Our home’s Brazilian teak floors upstairs are the same width as the LVP,” she explains. “The craftsman style in a natural wood tone worked so well with the space and the rest of the house.”
Lizzy’s interior design style—a mix of mid-century flair and vintage hand-me-downs—shines in the revamped basement. “We wanted the basement to feel light and airy with pops of color,” she says. “It’s an unexpected change from the upstairs and perfect for entertaining family and friends.”
Living with Flooret’s Nakan LVP
Now that the floors are installed, Lizzy couldn’t be happier. “They’ve been absolutely wonderful,” she says.
“The Nakan color is so natural that our friends, family, neighbors all think it's solid wood flooring. It is warm without being taking on an orange or yellow hugh; it will be able to stand the test of time.”
The floors are not only beautiful but also practical. “I was surprised by how soft they are underfoot,” Lizzy shares. “They’re extremely easy to clean, and our dog hasn’t put a single scratch in them—even with all her zoomies!” Her son and his friends can play freely without worrying about damaging the floors.
Unmatched Customer Experience
Working with Flooret made the process even smoother. “Nakan was backordered when we placed our order, but Flooret’s team was communicative and made ordering a breeze,” Lizzy says. “We even received our flooring earlier than expected!” Returning a portion of the flooring due to the condition of their concrete was equally hassle-free.
Bringing It All Together
To complete the look, Lizzy used Snowbound paint by Sherwin Williams for the walls and trim, pairing it with a rug from FLOR. The result is a cohesive space that combines mid-century charm with modern functionality.
A New Favorite Space
Lizzy’s basement has become a favorite spot for family and friends to gather. “It’s an unexpected but delightful change from the dark, rich teak floors upstairs,” she says. “We love how light and airy it feels now.”
With Nakan Craftsman, Lizzy has not only updated her home but also preserved its 1970s charm, creating a space that’s perfect for her family today and for years to come.
